The holiday season is here, and nothing makes Christmas more special than a handmade ornament. Our Charmed Volunteers have now created more than 100 ornaments made from vintage quilts.
Anyone who has ever quilted knows how much work goes into a single quilt, but after years of love sometimes they become so damaged that even the most talented quilter isn’t able to fix it. This DIY is a great way to give new life to a well-loved quilt.
To make these ornaments you will need:
- Paper and pencil
- A quilt
- Needle and thread
- Buttons
- Ribbon
Start by tracing a shape onto paper to create a stencil. We used angels, trees, stars, hearts and boot shapes.
Cut the stencil out and pin to the quilt, trace with fabric marker. You will need two matching pieces of your desired shape. For a stiffer ornament you could add a matching piece of felt in between the two quilt pieces.
Using thread, hand stitch the two pieces together with a straight stitch or blanket stitch depending on your skill level. Before the top of the ornament is stitched, you’ll want to cut a 6 inch piece of ribbon and make a loop. Insert the loop between the two pieces of quilt material then finish the stitching around the edge, this creates a loop to hang the ornament. Embellish with buttons as desired.
These ornaments make a great gift and what a fun way to give new life to grandma’s old quilt.
